The Commit Nicotine Lozenge is a form of nicotine replacement therapy (NRT),
similar to nicotine gum and the
nicotine patch. The nicotine lozenge is an FDA approved over-the-counter medication, and is available without a prescription to anyone 18 or older. GlaxoSmithKline, manufacturers of Nicoderm CQ patches and Nicorette nicotine gum, are also the makers of Commit. According to Glaxo, Commit relieves nicotine cravings and withdrawal symptoms by providing a temporary source of nicotine. Nicotine is released into the mouth as the lozenge dissolves over a 20-30 minute period. Commit is designed as a 12-week program Patients using Commit lozenges should not smoke while on the program, and should stop using the lozenges after 12 weeks Studies of the lozenge show significantly higher levels of smoking cessation, or abstinence, when tested against a placebo. |
